What Our Kids Are Capable Of: A Mom’s Perspective on ADHD

Watching your child work toward something big brings up all kinds of emotions. Pride, excitement, and sometimes a little fear, too.

This weekend, I watched my son test for his adult black belt in karate. Seeing him reach this milestone reminded me how much dedication, growth, and perseverance can go into achieving something meaningful.

It also made me think about how often we worry about what our children might struggle with, especially when we're raising a child with ADHD. We wonder if things will be harder for them. We worry about focus, confidence, and what the future might look like. And because we love them so much, we sometimes focus on the challenges before we see the possibilities.

But our kids are so much more than the things they find difficult.
They may need extra support, different strategies, or a little more time. Their journeys might look different from what we expected, and that's okay. What matters is giving them the opportunity to discover their strengths and find out what they're capable of.

That's part of why I created FirstThen: to help parents navigate the everyday challenges of raising a child with ADHD and find practical ways to support their growth.

Because our children don't need us to have all the answers or know exactly what their futures will hold. They need us to believe in them, support them, and give them room to surprise us.

This ADHD Awareness Month, let's remember to look beyond the struggles and make space for the possibilities.

Intentions into Action: This week, try to find a moment (small or large) when you can step back, trust your kiddo's potential, and watch them amaze you with what they can achieve when given the space to try.
